Day 1: Sunrise / Hair
It is 5 o’clock in
the morning, and Khun is woken up by the incoming rays of the morning sun. He
shifts a little between the sheets, trying to get to sleep again, but it’s in
vain. So he sits up in the bed, discovering the curtains were not closed like
he left them last night. How? His body gets on alert, even more so when he
notices Bam isn’t at his side. Where did his Bam go?
Khun gets out of the
bed and approaches the large window. It isn’t completely closed, and the answer
for that is the boy outside, at the terrace. Bam is sitting there on a lone
chair, his back to the window. Khun smiles warmly, relieved to see his lover
safe and sound. He opens the window and shudders immediately at the freezing
cold air. Since Bam doesn’t seem to notice his presence, he goes inside again,
wraps himself in his dressing gown, takes a blanket with him and goes out
again.
“Can’t sleep?”
Bam jumps slightly on
his chair, leaving Khun worried. Bam wasn’t on alert even when he is out in the
open. Then, he hears Bam whispering his name, voice hoarse. He has black
circles under his beautiful golden eyes. It’s obvious he hasn’t got any sleep.
“You should have
woken me up. I would have been more than happy to keep you company.” He tosses
the blanket on top of Bam’s head, earning an annoyed groan. “Even if it’s too
freezing to be sitting out here, I would still have seen the sunrise with you.
Here, cover yourself.”
“Thanks….”
Khun proceeds to sit
on the floor, on top of the warm area the blanket excess leaves.
“What were you doing
instead of getting the sleep you need, dear Bam?”
“Don’t get angry.”
Bam answers, after a soft laugh. “I wasn’t doing anything, really. Just
watching the night sky.”
“What’s so
interesting about this floor’s ceiling?”
“Nothing, and that’s
the problem.” Khun looks at him, not understanding what he is talking about,
but then he gets it. Rachel. He lets him continue, though. “I was wondering
again what the real stars would be like, if they would be amazing enough for
Rachel to abandon me for them.”
“Even if they were
real, and as impressing as they might be, there’s no excuse for her using you,
betraying you, almost killing you.”
“I know that now. I
was prepared to let her go, I really was. At first I wanted to get her back,
since her betrayal left the foundations of my little world crumbling down. I
wanted everything to be like it was before. Then, I continued to follow her
because I wanted to stop her from hurting other people, like she hurt me. I
always try to stop others from hurting people, but I didn’t want specifically her
to become a bad person. But when we were going to the Hidden Floor, I grew
tired of it. I knew she would keep doing bad things no matter what I do, and I
didn’t have the strength to simply confront her like I do with everybody else.
So I was going to let her go. Then she…”
He stops suddenly.
Khun knows what he wants to say, and why it so hard to say it. So he waits
patiently for the painful words to come out. He takes one of Bam’s hands
between his. It’s cold, and Khun squeezes it to make it warm again. This
gesture seems to give Bam the strength he was searching in order to continue.
“…she almost killed
you. At that moment, I understood I would have had to kill her myself if she
had succeeded. I understood you were more important to me than her now, but
still… I couldn’t do it. I just threatened her and let her go. I sincerely
didn’t want to see her again, it hurt too much. But again she gave me a reason
to pursuit her, in order to know about my parents, about my past. She wants me
to continue following her up the tower, and I… I don’t know what to do. I wish
she could become a real star, like she wants, to see her happy even if she is
far away from me. How bright could be the stars for her to be able to hurt me
like this, just to see them?”
“I don’t know.” Khun
answers after a few seconds of silence. Bam simply keeps looking at the ceiling
simulating a morning sky. “But I know how bright my star is, and is beautifully,
blindingly bright.”
“Khun-san?” Bam
finally turns to see him.
“You are my star,
Bam, if you had any doubt.” Bam smiles warmly for the first time since he got
here, cheeks slightly flushed. “I don’t care for any other star, and Rachel is
a complete fool for not seeing how gorgeous you are.” He stands up and bends
over to lean his forehead against Bam’s. Bam blinks twice, a little confused.
“But it doesn’t matter. You are my
star, after all. Isn’t it enough?”
“It is, but…”
“No buts. You are not
alone anymore. You have us now. I will never leave you again, I promise.”
Khun wraps Bam in his
arms. He can feel Bam sighing deeply, trying to relax against his chest. “I
already cried enough, Khun-san.”
“If you feel like it,
it’s never enough. It’s just the two of us; cry as much as you want. I will be
here with you.”
Bam’s hands clutch
his dressing gown. He hides his face and soon enough Khun can feel his
shoulders tremble, soft sobs against his own chest. Khun caresses his back,
making circles with the tips of his fingers, and then touches his now long
hair, regretting not having been there to watch it grow, and to protect Bam
from his own sorrow. Now that sunrise is watching his Bam cry his heart out.
It’s the second time for Khun throughout in this lovely and damned night. He
takes Bam’s face between his hands and lifts it at the level of his own. Bam
looks confused again, but closes his eyes slowly when Khun kisses him. Slowly,
tenderly at first, then a little deeper, trying to convey he is here, he is not
going anywhere anymore. Bam relaxes to this kiss, reciprocating after a while.
When Khun separates
from him, Bam’s big golden eyes still have some tears lingering at the corners.
He looks so sad, broken, betrayed. Khun hugs him tightly again. He would make
Rachel pay for hurting his Bam, for
making him look like this. That bitch would pay, even if Bam doesn’t want it. His
Bam is not like this fake sunrise. He is the real morning sun, breaking through
the darkness of the night. And Khun would gladly be the shadow casted by this
sun, engulfing in darkness anyone who dares to try to stop his sun from rising.
“…Your bedhead is a
mess.”
The burning rage
dwelling in his heart dissipates when he suddenly hears Bam mumbling something
like that. He can’t help but smirk, letting the bitterness be washed away by
that still slightly sad smile.
“Yours is awful too!”
He messes it up on purpose, and Bam just laughs softly. It’s so cute. “You want
me to do your hair, don’t you?”
Bam smiles even
wider, and nods with enthusiasm. Bam definitely likes him doing this kind of
little favors for him. He likes Khun taking care of him. And Khun is more than
happy to comply. He takes Bam’s hand and leads him inside, stopping for a while
when it seems Bam would trip with the enormous blanket wrapped around him.
At least the sun,
even fake as it is, had risen. Khun will never let the darkness surround Bam
ever again. He will make the sun rise for Bam whenever he wanted him to, even
if he had to be his darkness, and destroy the source of his pain once and for
all.
